3 SIMPLE WAYS TO CREATE MEMORIES WITH YOUR CHILD
When you were growing up, didn’t you love sitting, reminiscing and going through old photos? Our parents took pictures of us and had the photos developed.
As a child, I remember walking through my grandmother’s house and on the walls hung pictures in frames. It was the norm to sit together and laugh while flipping through photo albums and boxes full of actual pictures.
What happened to those days?
Today, with the change in technology, digital cameras, and smartphones, printed photos are obsolete. The new norm is pulling out a computer or phone and scrolling to show our children their precious moments.
The fact of the matter is that visual aids, especially photos, can help stimulate memories for our children. Visual aid holds true for people in the early stages of life.
Image association through photographs can play a critical role in allowing our children to reminisce about fun times in their lives. It can also help them be engaged in the present moment by helping them remember the people in their lives.
I honestly feel like the simplicity of life played a key role in who I am today. I’ve taken steps to incorporate some of those childhood pastimes into raising my daughter, and you can too!
Here are a few tips to get you started:
Create Photo Albums or Scrapbooks
Include pictures of family members, holidays, friends and environments, both past and present. By creating a sense of the timeline, you give them the opportunity to visit memories as well as connect with your child.
Encourage Your Child to Keep a Scrapbook That’s Meaningful to Them
Helping your child create a scrapbook and continue adding to it has its advantages. The first, of course, is that it’s a fun and rewarding activity. Second, doing this as a family activity sets an example, so your child will start to create on their own. It also provides a starting point for conversation.
